WCSSA Winter: Year 9/10 Boys Soccer
O what a bitter sweet experience we had! The Year 9/10 boys dominated the tournament all day only to lose the grand final 1 – 0.
We played four preliminary rounds and the results were as follows:
Round 1: Covenant defeated Creek St 2 – 0.
Round 2: Covenant drew with Kings College 0 – 0.
Round 3: Covenant defeated Victory 7 – 0.
Round 4: Covenant defeated Melton 6 – 0.
FINAL: Covenant lost to Creek St 0 – 1.
Goal scorers:
- Luke Sacco 4
- Dave Baird 4
- Josh De Hoog 2
- Stef Luong 2
- Nat Stubbings 1
- Jack Whatnall 1
- Daniel Alexander 1
We were all disappointed with the result but there were many positives that came out of the tournament. Sometimes [in fact, most of the time], it is more important to learn to loose well than win and not learn much. For example, the goal scored in the final against us was questionable to some degree – the referee made some good calls but also missed others. Some of the boys were convinced that the goal scored was an offside goal but much to my delight, they ‘copped it sweet’. The boys continued playing and did not remonstrate with the referee. Excellent self control, well done lads! Another example, Josiah Bashta [the big man with a little body], had a poor start to the tournament and the boys felt his pain and when Joey had the opportunity to redeem his earlier effort, he perform well – Joey came on and won good possession, assisted in ar goal and had a shot on goal himself. The boys were delighted, they all shared in his success. I will take THAT over a scoreboard victory every day!
I think this group of boys have enormous potential, I love their enthusiasm and I am so proud to be their coach.
