WCSSA Winter: Year 7/8 Girls Basketball
The year 7/8 Girls Basketball team won the WCSSA championship on Wednesday 29th of July, despite having only five players and no substitutions. Each match was exciting to watch and the girls went into the grand final undefeated. Tanika Vercoe lead the group admirable, contributing to the team’s defence strategies and helping her team mates employ the tactics on the court. Priscilla Cara, Taylah Beard and Hannah Plumridge demonstrated their excellent shooting skills and they applied great defensive pressure to their opponents at all times. Achol Agoth worked wonders under the ring gaining many rebounds. Her height was truly no match for some of the other teams.
A tight match was fought out between Covenant and Creek Street in the Grand Final and our girls went in with the memory of losing to the same team in the WCSSA Netball grand final earlier on in the year. Needless to say, there was a victory to be reclaimed! The girls played hard and with passion. Every minute had the Covenant parent cheer squad and I on the edge of our seats. Although Covenant went into the match with five players, we were down to four late in the last half due to too many personal fouls. However, the girls persevered and kept Creek Street away from their attacking end in the dying moments, taking the championship by a close 4 points.
A fantastic effort was put in by all of the girls and I was extremely proud of the way they played each of their games and upheld the Warrior spirit. Congratulations also to Tanika Vercoe who will be awarded the Best and Fairest medal at the next school Assembly for her contribution to the team throughout the day.
Well done girls.
