WCSSA Autumn: 7/8 & 9/10 Girls Netball Review

WCSSA 7/8 Girls Report

An excellent day was had by all at the WCSSA tournament in Bendigo and the Year 7/8 girls netball team put their heart and soul into each match, representing Covenant College admirably. They managed 3 wins out of 5 matches, scoring them a place in the grand final.

Results:

Round 1 – Covenant 17 def Melton Christian College B
Round 2 – Covenant 22 def Melton Grammar School
Round 3 – Creek Street B11 def Covenant 9
Round 4 – Melton Christian College 22 def Covenant 10
Round 5 – Covenant 15 def Creek Street B 8

The grand final was a nail-biter and despite a cheering crowd, Creek Street won the match by a small margin of 5 points!

Lead by team captains Tanika Vercoe and Vice Captain Bessie Mikelsons, the girls demonstrated their finesse in the goal circle and their consistently tight defence, in spite of fatigue and pressure. Shooters Taylah Beard, Hannah Plumridge and Ainsley Guidolin were on target all day and defenders Olivia Brown and Charis Ormesher did a great job keeping the ball down Covenant’s end. Few could match the speed and agility of our Centre Tanika and attackers Jordyn Flagg and Bessie Mikelsons never took their eye off the ball. Each of the girls were aware of their roles and played persistently, even when the opposition played rough. I was extremely proud of their efforts, as they also should be, as they played fairly and respected the umpire’s calls at all times throughout the day. Well done girls!

WCSSA 9/10 Girls Report

Covenant was represented by two teams in the 9/10 girls netball draw this year and both worked hard during training sessions to refine their skills in the lead up to the tournament. The A team were led by Captain Claudia Gebert and Vice Captain Shaylie Manning, who did a wonderful job pepping the team up and suggesting new strategies for effective play. Claudia, Nicola Gordon and Sally Frame dominated in the ring and scored 125 goals for the day between the 3 of them… an outstanding effort. Even when Covenant A had a comprehensive lead, they did not give up but pushed their opposition to the limit. Defensive players Shaylie, Sjaan Warren and Jenny Luong reached like they had never reached before and rebounded beautifully, giving the shooters maximum opportunity down the other end. Our speedy centre and Wing players Meg Mikelsons and Gianni Otieno were hard to catch and kept their cool even when the pressure was on. The A team did not lose a game and convincingly won their grand final!! The results of the A team are listed below.

Results:             COVENANT A TEAM

Round 1 – Covenant A 6 def Melton Christian College 6
Round 2 – BYE
Round 3 – Covenant A 14 def Covenant B
Round 4 – Covenant A 32 def Melton Christian College 4
Round 5 – BYE
Round 6 – Covenant A 30 def Covenant B 4
Grand Final – Covenant 19 def Melton Christina College 11

The B team also showed that they had spirit and endurance on the day, despite not coming away with any wins. They did however give their all and maintained a positive attitude despite their final results. Shooters Liz Brown and Emma Schrederis did a great job in the goal circle and even surprised themselves with some of their shooting! The strength and commitment of centre and wing players such as Rosie Debets, Georgia Murphy, Karen Nyugen and Krystal Efthimiou was admirable and keen defenders Mel Lendon and Donna Pattison demonstrated just how their skills have improved and how high they really can jump!

Overall a fantastic effort was given by all of the girls involved and it was a pleasure both in training sessions and on the day, to be your coach!
