WCSSA
The WCSSA (Western Christian Schools Sports Association) was founded by former Covenant College Sport Coordinator, Stephen Duke, with the vision of forming a competition that enables smaller schools and colleges founded on a Christian ethos to compete effectively despite smaller student numbers. Seven schools from around Geelong and Melbourne compete regularly in the WCSSA.
The standard within this competition rises each year and with solid rivalries having been established between competing schools, students are always anticipating each of the three major events throughout the year; the Autumn Tournament (Volleyball & Netball), Winter Tournament (Basketball & Soccer) and the Summer Tournament (Cricket, Softball & Tennis).
With each school being committed to Christian education, the effects are evident in competition, with students from rival schools often friends off the court and staying in contact over the year. The vibe of camaraderie and fellowship sits neatly amongst the students competitive drive to overcome their opponents.
Promisingly, Covenant College is beginning to set the benchmark within certain sports in this competition, such as Basketball and Volleyball, with success also in Soccer and Cricket. In 2008 Covenant College were Tournament Champions in Basketball (Boys: Year 7/8, 9/10 and VCE), Volleyball (Boys: Year 7/8 and 9/10), Cricket (Boys: Year 7/8) and Tennis (Girls: Year 7/8).
Covenant College were recently names the 2008 WCSSA Overall Champions (Years 7-10).
The first major WCSSA event for 2009 is the Autumn Tournament.
